What
are the applications deadlines?
The deadline for PhD applicants who wish to be considered for financial
support and teaching assistantships is January 1st. The final deadline
for all applications is March 15.
Am
I eligible for financial support or TAships?
The department offers financial aid packages to a small number of the
best applicants interested in working towards a PhD degree. These packages
may include fellowships, grants, and/or teaching assistantships. Applications
have to be received by January 1st to be considered for any financial
support.
Do
I have to pay the application fee?
Yes. There are no fee waivers available for international applicants.
A very small number of fee waivers are available to domestic applicants.
These requests are made through the Graduate Division. You must be able
to prove your financial need. Fee waiver request forms can be found at
www.graddiv.ucsb.edu/pubs/admissions/feewaiver.pdf
What
happens if I don’t pay the application fee?
Your application will not be considered complete until the application
fee is paid, therefore the department will not be able to consider you
for admission.
What
materials do I send directly to the department?
1. Letters of recommendation
2. Transcripts
3. Statement of Purpose
The application is completed and submitted online at the Graduate Division
website. The application fee, GRE scores, and TOEFL scores are sent to
the Graduate Division.

What
is the UCSB institution code used to send my GRE and TOEFL scores?
The institution code is 4835. A department code is not required.
Is
there a minimum score for the GRE
No.
What
if my GRE scores are more than 5 years old?
You will be asked to provide the Graduate Division with your original
score report.
Is
there a minimum score for the TOEFL?
Yes. They are as follows;
Internet-based test: 80
Computer-based test: 213
Paper-based test: 550
Will
my TOEFL scores expire?
Yes, the Graduate Division does to accept TOEFL scores that are more than
2 years old. After 2 years you must retake the test.
Who
needs to take the TOEFL?
Anyone whose native language is not English is required to take the TOEFL.
Exceptions will be considered for those who have completed a degree at
an institution whose primary language is English, but an exception is
not guaranteed.
Can
I take the IELTS instead of the TOEFL?
Yes. The minimum score for the IELTS is an overall band score of 7 or
higher.
When
will I be notified of my application status?
You can log on to your online application and check your application status.
The department will update it when your additional materials, such as
transcripts, letters of recommendation, and your statement of purpose
are received. Final admissions decisions will be made in March. You will
receive an email from the Graduate Division indicating whether you have
been admitted or denied.
What
classes are prerequisites for admission?
All students admitted should have a Bachelor's degree or its equivalent
in mathematics, statistics or a related field with significant quantitative
components. Coursework required for entering the graduate program includes
a year-long introduction to probability and statistics using calculus.
The statistical theory course should include estimation, hypothesis testing,
confidence intervals, regression, and ANOVA concepts. A linear algebra
course that teaches vector spaces, bases, and eigenvalues is also required.
Are
there deferrals?
No, there is no way to defer your admission. You will have to reapply
and pay the application fee. Because you were admitted in the past does
not mean you will automatically be admitted again.

Are
coversheets necessary?
Yes.
Missing coversheets will delay fellowship nominations.
Are
GRE Subject Scores required?
No.
We only require the GRE General Test
How
many students will receive financial aid?
The
number of students who receive funding varies from year to year, depending
on how many available packages we have. Generally, it is between 4 and
7 new students per year.
