What are the applications deadlines?
The deadline for PhD applicants who wish to be considered for financial support and teaching assistantships is January 1st. The final deadline for all applications is March 15.

Am I eligible for financial support or TAships?
The department offers financial aid packages to a small number of the best applicants interested in working towards a PhD degree. These packages may include fellowships, grants, and/or teaching assistantships. Applications have to be received by January 1st to be considered for any financial support.

Do I have to pay the application fee?
Yes. There are no fee waivers available for international applicants. A very small number of fee waivers are available to domestic applicants. These requests are made through the Graduate Division. You must be able to prove your financial need. Fee waiver request forms can be found at www.graddiv.ucsb.edu/pubs/admissions/feewaiver.pdf

What happens if I don’t pay the application fee?
Your application will not be considered complete until the application fee is paid, therefore the department will not be able to consider you for admission.

What materials do I send directly to the department?
1. Letters of recommendation
2. Transcripts
3. Statement of Purpose
The application is completed and submitted online at the Graduate Division website. The application fee, GRE scores, and TOEFL scores are sent to the Graduate Division.

What is the Statistics Department address that I send my application material to?
Department of Statistics and Applied Probability
Attn: Graduate Program Assistant
University of California
Santa Barbara, CA 93106-3110

What is the UCSB institution code used to send my GRE and TOEFL scores?
The institution code is 4835. A department code is not required.

Is there a minimum score for the GRE
No.

What if my GRE scores are more than 5 years old?
You will be asked to provide the Graduate Division with your original score report.

Is there a minimum score for the TOEFL?
Yes. They are as follows;
Internet-based test: 80
Computer-based test: 213
Paper-based test: 550

Will my TOEFL scores expire?
Yes, the Graduate Division does to accept TOEFL scores that are more than 2 years old. After 2 years you must retake the test.

Who needs to take the TOEFL?
Anyone whose native language is not English is required to take the TOEFL. Exceptions will be considered for those who have completed a degree at an institution whose primary language is English, but an exception is not guaranteed.

Can I take the IELTS instead of the TOEFL?
Yes. The minimum score for the IELTS is an overall band score of 7 or higher.

When will I be notified of my application status?
You can log on to your online application and check your application status. The department will update it when your additional materials, such as transcripts, letters of recommendation, and your statement of purpose are received. Final admissions decisions will be made in March. You will receive an email from the Graduate Division indicating whether you have been admitted or denied.

What classes are prerequisites for admission?
All students admitted should have a Bachelor's degree or its equivalent in mathematics, statistics or a related field with significant quantitative components. Coursework required for entering the graduate program includes a year-long introduction to probability and statistics using calculus. The statistical theory course should include estimation, hypothesis testing, confidence intervals, regression, and ANOVA concepts. A linear algebra course that teaches vector spaces, bases, and eigenvalues is also required.

Are there deferrals?
No, there is no way to defer your admission. You will have to reapply and pay the application fee. Because you were admitted in the past does not mean you will automatically be admitted again.

Who should I contact if I have further questions?
You should contact the Statistics Graduate Program Assistant at gradinfo@pstat.ucsb.edu

Are coversheets necessary?
Yes. Missing coversheets will delay fellowship nominations.

Are GRE Subject Scores required?
No. We only require the GRE General Test

How many students will receive financial aid?
The number of students who receive funding varies from year to year, depending on how many available packages we have. Generally, it is between 4 and 7 new students per year.
