Center for Sexual and Gender Diversity

The Resource Center for Sexual & Gender Diversity at UCSB is designed to be a safe and supportive environment for all students, staff, and faculty, emphasizing resources for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) community, as well as allies and those who are questioning their sexual and/or gender identity. The Center welcomes a diversity of racial, ethic, religious, political and cultural values while advocating for the welfare of those who have historical been marginalized because of their sexual and/or gender identity. The Director and staff are committed to serving the campus and larger community with professionalism and respect. The Center provides educational programming, social activities, advocacy and consultation with the goal of enhancing safety, tolerance and quality of life in the UCSB community.

  • Individual consultations with librarian subject specialists
  • Graduate student study lounge on the 8th floor with wireless access
  • Extended borrowing privileges
  • Cubicles available to PhD candidates for one quarter with the possibility of 5 renewals
  • 2 secure offices for 1 day loan for graduate students

 

Disabled Students Program(DSP)

The DSP provides academic support services to any student with a documented disability, at no cost to the student. DSP requires written verification from a medical doctor, psychologist, psychiatrist, and/or learning disabilities specialist. Some services available for students include:

If a TA/RA needs accommodations, the hiring department is responsible for providing those services. The Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor (VRC) in Human Resources will accept documentation and work with the department to make appropriate accommodations.

Early Childhood Care and Education Services

Year-around high quality early childcare is available on campus through the Orfalea Family Children’s Center (located on West Campus) and the University Children’s Center (located in the Student Resource Building). The Orfalea Family Children’s Center provides care for children ages 3 months to 5 years. The University Children’s Center provides care for children ages 3 months to 3 years. Both centers are open between 7:30am – 5:30pm Monday – Friday. Also provided by these centers are;

  • Reduced child-care rates for full-paying student families (approximately 40% lower than staff and faculty rates)
  • Family support services, including family support groups and educational meetings
  • Employment opportunities as classroom teaching assistants
  • Volunteer and intern opportunities
  • Research site opportunities

Graduate Students Association (GSA)

The GSA is the elected representative government for graduate and professional students at UCSB. The GSA works to ensure that graduate student concerns are addressed in on- and off-campus policy decisions. We also provide graduate students with information concerning decisions that are relevant to graduate student life and organize graduate social events.

How to Survive and Flourish, a Survival Guide for Graduate Women at UCSB, Composed and Written by Volunteer Graduate Students for Fellow Graduate Students.

  • This document is made available by the UCSB Women’s Center and is full of useful information for both men and women graduate students. Topics include funding, writing a dissertation, and finding a job.

Judicial Affairs

  • Training for TAs on academic integrity issues, advise TAs on handling disruptive students, and taking reports on hate incidents.

Multicultural Center (MCC)

The UCSB MultiCultural Center presents over 90 events each year that increase cultural awareness and understanding. These events include lectures, films and videos, panel discussions, readings, art exhibitions, and music, dance, and dramatic performances. Events are open to everyone and most events are free. The MCC’s facilities can be utilized by graduate students for programs, meetings, and events. The MCC can also provide funding for programs that compliment its mission statement.

Office of Research

  • Reviews proposals and accepts awards on behalf of the UC Regents for graduate student grant and fellowship proposals (such as National Science Foundation Doctoral Dissertation Improvement Grants) that require authorized representative endorsement
  • Guidance on intellectual property issues
  • Bi-monthly Funding Resources Newsletter that lists funding opportunities for faculty, postdocs, and graduate students

  • Monthly Graduate Mentor Newsletter
  • In-person assistance and advising offered by two graduate mentors
  • Organizational support for the Graduate Student Association
  • Registered graduate student organizations receive advising, event planning advace, room scheduling, and organizational accounting support through OSL

Women's Center

The Women's Center is a place where people work to understand the changing roles of women and men and to expand the educational, professional, and personal opportunities for women. The Center challenges sexism, racism, heterosexism, and classism and other barriers that inhibit women's inclusion and equal power. The Women's Center provides a climate in which women can celebrate and cultivate their common strengths as well as recognize their rich cultural and individual differences." The Women's Center has a library, meeting rooms, and net stations, an art gallery, and weekly workshops.

  • Internship opportunities
  • Graduate Student Lecture Series – Talks given by grad students in their areas of research, which is good practice for job talks
  • Academic Job Market Series – Panels with senior faculty members, tips and stories, phone and conference interviews, negotiating job offers, how to prepare for the job market
