Graduate Program: Admission

General Requirements for the Graduate Program
Our graduate programs are open to those who hold a bachelor’s degree in Statistics, Mathematics, or other fields with strong quantitative requirements.

Coursework & exam requirements for entering the graduate program:

  • One year of statistical theory that includes hypothesis testing, confidence intervals, best statistics and most powerful tests, regression and ANOVA concepts.
  • One course in linear algebra that includes vector spaces, bases in vector spaces, eigenvalues, and eigenvectors.
  • All applicants need to take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE).
  • Applicants from non-English speaking countries must take the TOEFL or IELTS exam; at the beginning of the quarter in which you first enroll at UCSB, you must also take the ELPE (English Language Placement Examination).
  • Applicants should have a minimum 3.0 grade point average during their last two years of study.

 

Application Procedures & Requirements

1. Electronic Application - All applicants apply via the Graduate Division's electric application. The electronic application can be found at https://www.graddiv.ucsb.edu/eapp/ . A non-refundable application fee of $70 (domestic applicants), $90 (international applicants) must accompany the application. Applications cannot be processed until the application fee has been paid. Domestic students can request a fee waiver from the Graduate Division by following these instructions.
Fee waivers are not granted to international applicants.

2. GRE Scores – All applicants are required to take the GRE exam and have the scores sent electronically to the Graduate Division using the Institution Code 4835. Scores more than 5 years old will not be accepted. The University and the Statistics Department do not have a minimum score requirement for the GRE.

3. TOEFL or IELTS Scores – International Students from non-English speaking countries are required to submit either TOEFL or IELTS scores to the Graduate Division using Institution Code 4835. Students who have earned a degree from a U.S. institution will have this requirement waived. Scores more than 2 years old will not be accepted. The following are the minimum scores required for the TOEFL and IELTS;
- TOEFL Internet Based Test (IBT): 80
- TOEFL Computer Based Test (CBT): 213
- TOEFL Paper Based Test (PBT): 550
- IELTS Minimum Band Score: 7

4. Transcripts – Send 2 copies of official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions directly to the Statistics Department using the following address:

5. Letters of Recommendation – Send a minimum of 3 letters of recommendation, including the required coversheet, directly to the Statistics Department using the above address.

6. Statement of Purpose – Submit 2 copies of your Statement of Purpose, including the required coversheet, directly to the Statistics Department using the above address.

 


Application Deadlines:

PhD Applicants: January 1st (funding deadline), March 15th (final deadline)
To be considered for fellowships and teaching assistantships, applications must be submitted by January 1st. The department will accept PhD applications until March 15th.

MA Applicants: March 15th
All applications must be submitted by March 15th.

Master’s applicants are not considered for fellowships and Teaching Assistantships.
