Our Department A campus of the University of California, the country’s premier public university, UC Santa Barbara is internationally recognized for its teaching and research excellence, and distinguished for its interdisciplinary programs and commitment to innovation. UCSB is one of only 62 institutions elected to membership in the prestigious Association of American Universities. In addition to five winners of Nobel Prizes, UCSB’s faculty includes many elected members or fellows of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (24), the National Academy of Sciences (26), the National Academic of Engineering (27), and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (38). The campus is now home to twelve national centers and institutes, eight of which are sponsored by the National Science Foundation, including the Materials Research Laboratory, the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis, the Southern California Earthquake Center, and the renowned Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics. Because of its pre-eminence in physics, engineering, and materials science, UCSB is the site of one of the prestigious California Institutes for Science and Innovation. The interdisciplinary California Nano Systems Institute, a research partnership between UCSB and UCLA, is proving matter at the scale of a billionth of a meter in search of beneficial technologies that could revolutionize environmental management, medicine, communications, computing, data storage, electronics, instrumentation, and materials. UCSB is the recipient of a high and steadily rising level of external funding for research. External funds have nearly doubled over the past decade to a record $170 million in the year just concluded. The University of California’s Natural Reserve System, consisting of 34 protected natural areas throughout the state of California, maintains significant examples of California’s diverse aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems for teaching, research, and public service. UCSB oversees seven such sites. These surrounding ecological habitats provide a natural laboratory where new approaches to conservation and environmental restoration are tested. More than 200 majors, degrees, and credentials are offered through UCSB’s five schools and the Graduate Division. UCSB enrolls 20,000 students, about 2,600 of them at the graduate level. The campus
is sited on 989 acres on the California coast approximately 100 miles
northwest of Los Angeles. For
