About the CRFMS

The goal of the Center for Research in Financial Mathematics and Statistics (CRFMS) at UCSB is to encourage interdisciplinary research, and to provide national and international leadership in quantitative finance from different perspectives. The Center brings together faculty, students, and visitors affiliated with the departments of Statistics and Applied Probability, Economics (Econometrics and Finance), Mathematics (Applied Mathematics), Computer Science and others on the UCSB campus and facilitates interdepartmental cooperation in mathematical modeling, statistical data analysis and efficient computational methods specific to financial data.

Research activities of the CRFMS are directed toward study of financial markets, asset prices, risk management, investment strategies, derivatives pricing and hedging, and portfolio optimization among other topics. To bridge the gap between the financial and insurance industries, the Center will coordinate the study of risk measures and exchange of risks between agents.

The Center encourages cross-disciplinary teamwork merging theoretical concepts, computational methods, and software design. Interactions among Center faculty will create an environment in which Center members benefit from the expertise across disciplines of economics, statistics, applied mathematics and scientific computation.

The CRFMS provides a forum for the scholarly exchange of ideas about these subjects through distinguished lectures, seminars, conferences, scholarly meetings, and publications. The Center will sponsor postdoctoral scholarships for young researchers working in the area of finance and will arrange visits of more senior internationally known scholars.

Visitors to the Center will offer courses in the areas of their expertise thus significantly broadening exposure of our students to various topics in modern finance and actuarial statistics. Researchers associated with the Center will be expected to guide graduate students and visitors and postdoctoral students to be involved with research of graduate students. Both undergraduate and graduate students trained in these disciplines are expected to participate in the seminars and conferences organized by the Center.

The CRFMS provides a new environment that brings together the academic and financial communities. The combination of the two communities will increase the diversity of research and teaching at UCSB, specifically providing students contacts with prospective employers. The Center will benefit the local financial community by providing both the access to and interpretation of the most recent advances in financial mathematics and statistics.
